A career that clears no other bar lands here too.

How the game picks your rung
The game reads the bars from the top and stops at the first one your career clears, in this order: The GOAT, Hall of Fame, NBA All-Star, then The Great What-If for a prospect who never arrived, then NBA Journeyman before NBA Starter and NBA Role Player, then the two EuroLeague rungs, NBA Benchwarmer, Minor League Starter and EuroLeague Benchwarmer. A career that clears nothing ends on The Great What-If.
A starter season means starting at least half the games you played, at 24 minutes a game or more. A rotation season means 17 minutes a game or more without that. The NBA and EuroLeague bars count those seasons league by league.
A star season is an NBA starter season with an impact of 37 or more per game: points, plus 0.65 per rebound, 0.8 per assist and 1.8 per steal or block. The major awards are MVP, Finals MVP, All-League, the scoring title and Defensive Player of the Year.

The legacy score
Behind the rung sits a legacy score from 0 to 100. It shows next to your name in your draft class at retirement, and the top rungs and both honors read it. It adds up these parts:

The Hall of Fame honor and retired jerseys
The Hall of Fame honor, with its ceremony, goes to every career on The GOAT or Hall of Fame rung, and to an NBA All-Star career with a legacy score of 80 or more.
One club at most retires your jersey: the club of your longest run in the career (the earlier one on a tie). It does when that run lasts 6 seasons in a row or more and either includes a title, or the career has a legacy score of 60, or a peak leadership of 88.
The public Hall of Fame
The public Hall of Fame is a separate room from the honor above. Every finished career whose name you typed at setup is filed there on its own, whatever its rung. A career that kept the name the game drew is never filed, and names with slurs or profanity are refused.
Each name holds one seat, whatever the case of its letters. The seat changes only for a strictly better career on the Hall of Fame score (then NBA rings, then peak OVR), and only from the browser that first claimed it.
The Hall of Fame score is its own number, with no cap: career points count up to 34 (1 per 650 points), each NBA ring 6, each other title 3, each MVP 8 in any league, each Olympic or World Cup gold 4, every other award 1.2, and 0.25 per point of peak OVR above 60. The room can be read on 4 boards:

Difficulty notches
Difficulty opens once one of your careers reaches Hall of Fame or better, with any build, and then every notch opens at once. Each notch keeps the rules of the notches below it, and the setup screen shows the best rung you cleared at each one.

How a career ends
From age 32, each new season can bring the retirement question. The chance starts at 4%, plus 0.6 point per point of health below 100, and rises 7.5 points per year past 32, up to 90%. A player 27 or older whom the NBA would only sign as a prospect can be asked too, with 14 points more and 5 more per year past 27. From 31, a player at 12 health or less is always asked.
You can retire at the end of the season or play one more year, and when no contract holds you, you can also move abroad for a last chapter. At 40 the question always comes, and that season is the last one whatever you answer.
Two things end a career without asking. From 32, a severe injury can end it on the spot (8% of severe injuries at 32, 3 points more each year). And a player of 32 or more who was asked this season, kept playing and finished the season at 8 health or less is retired by the medical staff.

The public Hall of Fame is separate: every career signed with your own name is sent there, and it takes the seat when that name is free or when it beats your best career under it.

The Great What-If takes a prospect who never arrived: a lottery pick or a peak talent of 85 who played 6 pro seasons or fewer without a starter's run in the NBA or the EuroLeague, or whose body gave out by 32. It also catches any career that clears no other bar.

When does a player retire in Bball Destiny?

From 32, a severe injury can end a career without asking, and a body at 8 health or less forces retirement in a season when the question came.
