What is a text-based basketball game?
Wikipedia defines text sims as games that use a text-based element to simulate some aspect of the real world. In basketball, the court stays off screen: each moment arrives as a few lines with a choice under them, and the result comes back as numbers, such as a stat line, a draft slot or a contract.
They come in two kinds. In a management sim you run a team from the front office, as in Basketball GM. In a career sim you are the player, and the choices are his: where to play, when to declare for the draft, which offer to sign. Bball Destiny is a career sim.
How does a Bball Destiny career play, from 16 to retirement?
A career moves one season at a time. Each season opens with its stories, then resolves as a stat line: the engine never plays a game out possession by possession.
At 16: create your prospect
Setup asks for a nationality, a position, a build, a jersey number and a name. Your passport decides where you are at 16: in a US high school (United States, Canada, and Australia) or in a European minor league (France, Germany, and Serbia). Each position opens its own builds, 25 in all, and 10 of them stay locked until one of your careers earns them.
Every season: stories, then a stat line
A season holds 2 stories before its games, and 3 from 17 to 20, the years a player is built. They come from a bank of 450 events. Each one offers 2 to 5 answers, and each answer shows its risk, from Safe to Long shot, read off your own player's odds: the same answer can read Safe for one build and Risky for another.
From 19 to 22: the draft
A US high school prospect reaches a first crossroads at 17: a college program, the G League or a contract in Europe. Between 19 and 22 you pick the year you declare, and at 22 you enter automatically. The combine comes first, then draft night, and your slot sets your first contract.
The pro years
The career can cross 7 leagues in all, from US high school to the NBA, with the G League, China and the EuroLeague in between. After your first contract the market pays by role, free agency opens when a deal runs out, a trade can move you in the middle of a season, and national teams call in the summer.
From 32: the retirement question
From 32, each season can bring the retirement question, and at 40 it always comes: that season is the last. From 25, any season recap also lets you walk away. A torn ACL or Achilles can end a career at any age.
The career then lands on the legacy ladder, 13 rungs from The Great What-If to The GOAT. Sign it with your own name and it is sent to the public Hall of Fame.

How is a career sim different from a text management sim?
Both run on text and numbers. In a career sim you sit in the player's chair, and in a management sim you sit in the general manager's.
| Feature | Basketball GM (management sim) | Bball Destiny (career sim) |
|---|---|---|
| You are | The general manager of a team | One player |
| You decide | Draft picks, trades, re-signings, free agents, ticket prices | Your answer to each story, the year you declare, the offers you sign |
| How long it lasts | As many seasons as you want | One career, from 16 to 40 at the latest |
| The players | Real rosters for any season in history | Invented, every teammate and rival |
| Price | Free, no account required | Free, no account required |
Pick the career sim to live one story from the inside, and the management sim to build a dynasty from the office. If you want to dribble yourself, look beyond text games: Hoop Land, a 2D basketball game, has a Career Mode in its Premium Edition where you play, spectate or simulate each game.
